Watching France and Senegal last week, I couldn’t help but notice that four of the 22 starters on the pitch had played for Stade Rennais – Dembélé, Doué, Sarr and Mendy. I combed through the full squad lists for every national team to see how many more I could find. The results were pretty remarkable: I counted 20 current or former Stade Rennais players at the World Cup. Four players (Dembélé, the Doué brothers, Moreira) came through the youth academy. 13 of the 48 teams (over one in four!) at the tournament have at least one player with Rennes connections. Here’s the list. Did I miss anyone?

Nicely done. FYI, we already have a pretty exhaustive page here https://forum.stade-rennais-online.com/ … 1#p1661771

Many players from this world cup played or are still players for Stade Rennais, yes indeed.
But most of them played for Rennes when they were not mature enough, or not really interested by the club.
They saw Stade Rennais as a step to a bigger club, and left too early.
Raphina, Dembélé, Doué, for instance, played not long enough to make an impact on the club.
In this club, those who stay are those who didn't find the "right project" (meaning $$$$$), and those who left too soon are giving now their best in others clubs (Camavinga at Real Madrid, Doku at Manchester City, Raphina at Barcelona, Dembélé and Doué at PSG of course, and soon Embollo in a new club to be announced).
It is a little sad to witness it each and every season...
In the past, we had players with strong links to this club (Didot, Danze, Ferret, Lemoine,...), but it is a notion of the past.
Now players are coming from all around the world, et Stade Rennais is a 3rd-league club (1st league clubs are top five in England, Madrid(s) and Barcelona in Spain, Bayern Munich and Dortmund in Germany ; PSG is in the 2nd league, even with this double winning european cup, with italian clubs and - too - many england clubs out of the top 5) were players are just staying for a few months.

PSG in the 2nd league today? OK, you don't like them but you can't be serious. It's the best team in Europe and they proved it twice!
And about Danzé, Didot, Ferret and Lemoine, the reason why they stayed so long in the club is just a matter of talent (or lack of talent) compared to world-class players like Dembélé, Doué, Doku or Camavinga.
You forget that in the past the same story happened with Gourcuff, Wiltord, and others.
It's sad, but what can the SRFC do against the power of money?

Don't make me wrong : PSG is the best team in europe, but when a player has to choose his next club, PSG isn't its first choice, because of the level and media exposure of the French championship.
Ligue 1, compared to Premier League or Liga, isn't very attractive, plain and simple. And that makes PSG a member of the 2nd league of choices, in european clubs/championship.
Didot, Ferret and Lemoine didn't stay, if you remember well ; eventually, they left (early, for Ferret, who came back later, like Brassier now), agains't their will, because the club decided it. They had no choice. They wanted to stay.
And Toulouse couldn't believe they had the opportunity to host such a player (Didot) !
St Etienne, too, was eager to sign Lemoine ; and Ferret was very successfull in every club he signed. Thanks to that, Rennes called him back.
But i agree with you about Gourcuff ; he left too early, when he could have stayed a little longer in the club. He proved his attachment to the club, when he came back, alas not very healthy.
Wiltord left too early and came back to late, I agree again.
Exceptions, not rules...

I still disagree. They were not exceptions, or Petr Cech, Yann M'Vila, Edouard Mendy, Brahimi, and a lot of very young players are exceptions too, which makes a lot of exceptions!
And for the PSG, no need to mention the list of world-class players who joined the team in the last ten years. Why? Very simple : money!
