Watching France and Senegal last week, I couldn’t help but notice that four of the 22 starters on the pitch had played for Stade Rennais – Dembélé, Doué, Sarr and Mendy. I combed through the full squad lists for every national team to see how many more I could find. The results were pretty remarkable: I counted 20 current or former Stade Rennais players at the World Cup. Four players (Dembélé, the Doué brothers, Moreira) came through the youth academy. 13 of the 48 teams (over one in four!) at the tournament have at least one player with Rennes connections. Here’s the list. Did I miss anyone?

Nicely done. FYI, we already have a pretty exhaustive page here https://forum.stade-rennais-online.com/ … 1#p1661771

Many players from this world cup played or are still players for Stade Rennais, yes indeed.
But most of them played for Rennes when they were not mature enough, or not really interested by the club.
They saw Stade Rennais as a step to a bigger club, and left too early.
Raphina, Dembélé, Doué, for instance, played not long enough to make an impact on the club.
In this club, those who stay are those who didn't find the "right project" (meaning $$$$$), and those who left too soon are giving now their best in others clubs (Camavinga at Real Madrid, Doku at Manchester City, Raphina at Barcelona, Dembélé and Doué at PSG of course, and soon Embollo in a new club to be announced).
It is a little sad to witness it each and every season...
In the past, we had players with strong links to this club (Didot, Danze, Ferret, Lemoine,...), but it is a notion of the past.
Now players are coming from all around the world, et Stade Rennais is a 3rd-league club (1st league clubs are top five in England, Madrid(s) and Barcelona in Spain, Bayern Munich and Dortmund in Germany ; PSG is in the 2nd league, even with this double winning european cup, with italian clubs and - too - many england clubs out of the top 5) were players are just staying for a few months.
