Peter Beardsley is A LEGEND, just like Alan Shearer (sorry)
How did a Carlisle United Supporter end up on the Stade Rennais forum though? I mean, you play weekly with teams as Kidderminster, Stevenage Borough, Forest Green...Or let's not be mean... Just kidding...
Tranmere, Yeovil, Oldham or Huddersfield.... But anyway, it's no jokes whatsoever, being a Reading resident I could not possibly take the piss on a football topic... How did you end up here?
What are the projects for Carlisle?
What is the future?
Who are your stars?
When do you expect promotion to Championship?
Cheers

Tony,
The unofficial forums (strictly speaking 'fora') are clearly the best ones because the typical club forum restricts freedom of speech. In England there is a federal type system of unofficial forums which just requires one registration. This is the FootyMad empire. So, you may log into the one for your club and afterwards select from a drop-down box to go to another club for a bit of banter.
Footymad covers nearly all of the clubs in the top five levels of England and the top four levels in Scotland. The lowest level club that I have 'visited' is Nelson who must be at level nine! A few of the FootyMad sites are not much used because the fans remain loyal to their old individual sites. i.e. A Barrow FootyMad forum was created late last year and their supporters largely ignore it, preferring to remain on their long-established self-created site.
Since it is easy to visit the forums of other clubs (i.e. one login gets you access to any club's forum) there is much banter between the fans of various clubs. We (Carlisle United) and Leeds United started a bit of mutual derision / scorn / sarcasm a couple of years ago and after a few months things settled down so that things are now quite affable. Several fans of each club now arrange to meet each other socially early on match days when the two clubs meet.
So, when I suggested that we reach out to a foreign forum in the same way that we reach out to Leeds United, the first response was from someone who had seen Stade Rennais play several times. He admired the supporters. There was a generally favourable attitude towards French clubs.

Our projects / future is to remain in business. A lot of clubs below Championship level are in a bad way. Too many have spent money thinking that they will succeed and recoup it. We are breaking even but have a 'soft' loan from our previous owner Fred Story. This is for £1.5 million, so depending upon your point of view we are either £1.5 million in debt or are OK. It is rumoured that FS will accept long term repayment in the form of advertising (match day programme, pitch-side boards etc) for his house buildng / civil engineering businesses. This remains to be seen.
As for star players there are none at present. When we went down to the Conference we took on a young squad goalkeeper who had done the rounds of Lancashire clubs from Manchester City down to Oldham Athletic and been show the door at them all. We sold him to Coventry City at the end of season 2007/8. It was Kieran Westwood. Joe Garner was also sold to Nottingham Forest.
Our current owners have done OK in their own businesses but have no spare cash to put into the club. They also have some very defensive financial habits. They have an agreement with FS that any sale of the club must recoup the FS £1.5 million. The club will certainly not go bankrupt but it is equally certain that under the present ownership the best that will be achieved is that we retain our 3rd tier status.
I see that Stade Rennais are 9th in the French top tier. What is the future for the club? Are we likely to see many of their players in the France team in next year's World Cup?

Hi wgcd, i'll just reply to your last questions so that it will not interfere with the discussion between Puchkin and yourself.
We are actually ranked 6th but the very last match of the season could see us finishing either 4th, 5th or 7th.
The League one this season was very hard fought.
As i tried to explain on your board, the club is following a not too fast but constant progression.
We've beaten the club's record number of points earned in a season, and we'll try and do even better next year.
We might fail next saturday on reaching a spot to the Europa League, but if we succeed, we'll also try and pass more rounds than this year. Otherwise we'll concentrate and the championship and the national cups, hoping to finish a little bit closer to the first place.
We have 2 players that are regularly called by Raymond Domenech : right fullback Rod Fanni, the competition on the right side with Bacary Sagna is tough but he still has a chance, and Jimmy Briand who is a very talented poison for the opposite defense but sadly for him he broke his Knee a month ago.
So you might only see Rod Fanni from Rennes next summer.

Thanks for your messages on both boards. You now have access to a vast number of English and Scottish boards without need for any more subscription processes. Just go to the 'Team' box near the top left of our board and select any of the teams. We now have 'conversations' with Leeds United fans though sometimes some of our people and some of their people can be less than polite. Mainly though, we are all on good terms.
I will be back here tomorrow.

Still not done : Our team's presentation.
The Stade Rennais F.C have been founded in 1901, we won two times the French Cup, in 1965 and 1971 (and we lost this year's final ...). During the 80's and 90's the performances of "les Rouges et Noirs" (that's our nickname, means Blacks&Reds) was not good, we have been relegated several times from first division (L1).
In 1998 Francois Pinault*, one of the biggest french fortune (8th in Europe I believe) bought the Stade Rennais, because he likes this team, indeed, he leaved during his childhood at 30 miles from Rennes.
The first year was good (5th), with Paul le Guen (coach), and during the second year we did a final of Intertoto cup against Turin.
The beginning of these 11 years (98 to 09) period was also assimilated to nonsense purchases, like Severino Lucas for 20M and Mario Hector Turdo for 12M. 32M of euros for .... nothing.
Following these errors due to scouting, staff and experience weaknesses, Francois Pinault have decided to build the club piece by piece, with infrastructures like our young center which is now the best in France and one of the best in Europe, or like a real professional training center etc...
The beginning of this phase started in 2003, the major actors was Olivier Monterrubio (two times best french assistman), Alexander Freï (2 times 20 goals, one time best french striker), Kim Kallstrom... During this period (2003-2008) We had also Erik Edman, Yoann Gourcuff, John Utaka, John Mensah, Mario Melchiot, Etienne Didot, Petr Cech...
Consequently, we have been qualified 3 times on the last 4 years for the UEFA cup, and if we win against Marseille for the last game of the season, we have a chance to be qualified for Europa League next year.
This year, first team players are :
Goalkeeper : Nicolas Douchez (28yo), one of the best french goalkepper, he has the best saves' statistics in France.
Back line (third one in L1, maybe second in one week):
Rod Fanni (27yo, french international, have been elected best right back of the year)
Kader Mangane (26yo, Senegalese International, amazing this year untill his suspension in march)
Peter Hansson (32yo, Swedish international, and Rennes' captain)
Carlos Bocanegra (plays left back in Rennes, 29yo, U.S. captain)
Midfield :
Fabien Lemoine (22yo, under 23 french international young talent from young center)
Stemane M'Bia (22yo, cameroonian international, young talent from Kadji sport Academy, he arrived when he was 17yo)
Jerome Leroy (34yo, he has one of the best technical abilty of the L1)
Sylvain Marveaux (23yo, under 23 french international, really technical player, from youg center, he come back for an 8 months injury)
Strikers :
Jimmy Briand (24yo, french international from our young center too, ligaments injured 1 month and a half ago)
Moussa Sow (23yo, under 23 french international from our young center, first year with Rennes' professional team, 12 goals)
Mickael Pagis (35yo, he has one of the best technical abilty of the L1)
This year youngs talents from the young center in first team too : Romain Danzé (midfielder, 23yo, good crossing abilty, under 23 french international), Jires Kembo-Ekoko (21yo offensive midfield or striker, amazing dribbling abality, under 23 french international)...
Next year, even if Stephane M'Bia will leave Rennes for around 12M, we will have an 100% Asamoah Gyan (23yo), the emergence of several youngs players, and our financial situation is positive.
We are confident about the future because of the recent declaration of Francois Pinault which was "we have to grow and the next objectives will be to target the podium. In a few years it coulb be envisaged to be french champion. We have a really skillful and talented generation who will start with first team next year and some players from our young center who are already playing in L1.
Most skillful players from our young center are Yacine Brahimi (offensive midfielder), Yann M'Vila (central midfielder), Samuel Souprayen (left or central back), Kevin Théophile Catherine (right back).... These players won the 2008 french under 18 cup.
We have also bought Asamoah Gyan (striker, from Udinese, ghanean international) last year, for 8M, but unfortunatly, he had some physical problems this year, consecutively to a chirurgical intervention in January 2008. He has shown on the last matchs that he can be really helpful for next year.
* Francois Pinault a french selfmade man own via a holding called Artemis, Puma, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Christies, and others french companies.
Rumours say that he has the first wordwide contemporary art collection. He has been also elected, at least two times, most influent person worldwide for contemporary art.
I hope it helps you to learn about our team.

Well we don't get to see her very often, her Husband's place must be in Paris, Her family's in Mexico, she works in the USA... Actually she might live in a plane ^_^
But she definitely gives us an additional motivation to go to the stadium.

The most well known person to appear at our ground was Elton John who did a concert there in June two years ago. The stage was at one end of the pitch, the remainder of the pitch had seats on it and the other normal parts of the ground were also sold out. I was there in 'central mid-field'. The audience consisted of people of all ages. Everyone enjoyed it because, unlike some performers, he sang all of his famous songs. :)
