Hi, as you know I am a Celtic fan from Glasgow Scotland and we are in the same group in the Europa League. I would like to know more on the history and current affairs if Rennes and if anyone on here could help me I will be grateful. Celtic were founded in 1887 by Irish catholic immigrants as a charity club set up to help the Irish community in Scotland who fled Ireland after the potato famine which brought famine and poverty to all of Ireland and some of Scotland. In Scotland the Irish remained in poverty and Celtic's earning went to helping the poor children of the Irish community. Our first game was in 1888 against our fierce rivals Rangers FC in which we won 5-2. Celtic have had great success in Scotland and worldwide with 42 Scottish Premier League Championships. And multiple Scottish Cup trophies. In 1967 Celtic won the European Cup with a team of 11 Scottish players born within a 30 mile radius of Celtic Park, something which has never been replicated in World football to this day. Celtic were the first British and northern european team to have won the European Cup. The winning team were nicknamed 'The Lisbon Lions' after the final against Inter Milan which we won 2-1. In 1970 with the same team we reached another European Cup final against Feyenoord which we unfortunately lost.
Celtic these days have not won the Scottish league since 2008 which has angered our supporters as our rivals Rangers have been winning it instead whilst they battle bankruptcy. Celtic as a club are not political but fans lean towards Left-wing anti fascist politics as are our ultra' group the Green Brigade who occasionally use political banners in their section. Banners with Che Guevara and Irish and Scottish freedom fighters all are sights at Celtic Park. Celtic Park holds 60,832 people and gets around 55,000 for a normal SPL game and a near full attendence at European matches and derby games against Rangers.

So Who Are Rennes?
The most frustrating french team ever...
Founded in 1901. Has always been professional (first or second division) since the creation of the french professional league in 1932.
Has finished in the top ten of Ligue 1 in the last 8 years. Has NEVER reached the top 3 of Ligue 1 in his whole history.
Major honours : 2 french cups: 1965 and 1971. That's all...

Yes we have a very frustrating team, capable of dominate a game but never win it .
We also have the best french youth academy since half of dozen years.
In almost every club of L1 there is a player trained in Rennes. We are fucking professional with this, some other clubs offers some juicy contracts to attract teenagers, but we don't that, we have and propose to young players a real and interesting project. Like this we have good and not-so-dumb players (which aren't only attracted to money , it's important sometimes)
That's why our squad is quite young (but sometimes lacks of experience) and we reveal players like M'Vila. During years we weren't enough attractive to keep those kind of players. But we made some progress, and now we target Europeans competitions every year and with that we can keep good players.
ie, Stade Rennais FC is the french Arsenal.

Ha ha ha very interesting you have asked us about the protestants in our team. Celtic from day one has never had an anti-protestant agenda and has protestants in the team since our first game we have ever played which was against Rangers in which we won 5-2 in 1888. Our European Cup winners in 1967 three quarters of them were protestant and Celtic fans also. Celtic have thousands of protestant supporters, as Celtic are a club open to all from any walk of life. My whole family are protestant, but I'm the only Celtic fan. Rangers however are the anti-catholic team. Rangers had an anti-catholic policy until 1989 when they signed their first known catholic Maurice Johnston who used to play for Celtic. When he signed for Rangers there were protests with people ripping up tickets and scarves and other Rangers memorabilia. If you were found to be a Catholic or associated with Catholics before 1989 at Rangers you were forced to leave the club, which happened to Manchester United Manager Alex Ferguson when he married a Catholic woman. The Rangers home football kit has always been for around a century A blue shirt, White shorts and black socks with red at the knees, the red at the knees is a reference to a song rangers fans sing which mentions "we're up to our knees in fenian blood surrender or you'll die", a fenian is an Irish catholic who have been prejudiced against by Rangers. Ex catholic player Lorenzo Amouruso always turned his red part of the socks into the inside of his socks when he learned the story behind the red on the socks. Catholics do play for Rangers now, however blessing yourself on the fields isn't taken to kindly by their fans.

Do Rennes or your fans have a political stance or any friendships with other teams? Celtic are comrades with FC St Pauli in Germany, Athletico Bilbao of Spain, Villarreal of Spain, Barcelona of Spain, Borussia Dortmund of Spain and other teams.

As philippe said,we don't really let politics mix with our football. We don't really have real partnership or official links with other clubs either, although there has been friendly contact made with other clubs in the past during the European encounters.
The only "official" link there is between our club and another professional club, as far as I know, is with the ES Eski?ehirspor . They are in the First Turkish division and were founded following Rennes' victory in the 1965 Coupe de France in honour of Rennes and with the colour of Rennes. There is a direct link there, then, but absolutely nothing official like a partnership between the two clubs or meetings between the boards, friendlies between the teams or anything like that.
There might be other links, between our ultras and other ultras or maybe with other clubs, but I can't think of anything really significant...

Basically they dont want Celtic as they would have to get Rangers aswell as we are seen as a double act, they don't want Rangers due to the trouble they cause which effects us unfortunately. But Rangers might be no more next year.
